Tiivistelmä
Tämän kandidaatintutkielman aiheena on selvittää ja analysoida energiatoimialan allianssien kehitystä Euroopassa vuosien 1990–2009 aikana. Euroopan energia- ja sähkömarkkinat muuttuivat 1980-luvun lopulla, jolloin kansallisia monopoleja puret-tiin ja energia- ja sähkötoimialalle haluttiin luoda kilpailulliset markkinat. Tarkoituksena on tutkia, onko energiatoimialalla muodostettu alliansseja noususuhdanteisesti vuosien 1990–2009 aikana.
Tutkimuksen empiirisessä osassa on käytetty SDC Platinum-tietokantaa, josta on saatu kaikki Euroopassa muodostetut energia-alan allianssit vuosina 1990–2009. SDC Platinum-tietokannasta saatavaa aineistoa on kuvailtu ja analysoitu laadullisin menetelmin. The subject of this bachelor theses is to study and analyse the development of alliances in the energy industry in Europe during 1990–2009. Europe`s energy and electricity market changed a lot in the late 1980s when the national monopolies were putting down. The idea was to create competitive market in the energy industry. The aim of the study is to find out whether more alliances have formed in the energy industry in Europe during 1990–2009 after the privatization of the market. The empirical part of the study aims to solve what kind of alliances have formed in the energy industry, which motives have influenced the formation of alliances, what kind of criteria have had the most important role of selecting an alliance partner and in which industry field alliance partners belong to.
In this study alliance has defined to be either joint venture or strategic alliance. There are three different theories to handle the motives to form alliance which are resource based theory, transaction cost theory and strategic and social aspects. The factors of partner selection has discussed through the theory of task- and partner-related selection criteria.
The database called SDC-Platinum has been used in the empirical part of the study. SDC-Platinum includes information of the energy industry alliances in Europe which has been formed during 1990–2009. The data of SDC-Platinum has been described and analysed with qualitative methods.
