The aim of this Master’s Thesis was to understand how individuals with a higher education degree cope with job loss and prolonged unemployment. This research focused on forced career transition and coping with unemployment from the point of view of the individual. In addition, the usefulness of the unemployment supporting services was studied. The research was executed as a descriptive qualitative case study. The empirical data was collected through interviewing 13 unemployed people with a higher education degree currently living in Uusimaa area. The interviews were carried out by using the semi structured thematic interview method.
Based on the results of the study it can be concluded that job loss was experienced as having both negative and positive effects. Job loss was experienced partly as a relief and a temporary break. The individuals coped fairly well with the actual situation of the job loss, especially when they were prepared for the change, and when the reasons regarding the notice of termination were clear. Individuals with a higher education degree widely used both emotional and problem based strategies to cope with their unemployment. Active job-hunting and studying stood out as the best means for coping with unemployment. Prolonged unemployment distinctly weakened the well-being of the individual and highlighted the importance of peer support. In addition, this study showed that public employment agency services do not sufficiently support individuals with a higher education degree. Changes within the labor markets call for a new point of view when reconsidering careers – supporting services should be reassessed and developed to better respond to the changed demands of the labor markets.
