15th c. Small initials consist of dark brown and red elements. The script is Gothic minuscule (gothica textualis quadrata) with sharp angles. Quadratic notation on a red four-line staff (17 mm), linea (not many), custos. The foliation runs in "opening signatures" (seep. 161): red small letter in the middle ofi the head on the verso, red roman numeral in the same manner on the recto. Certainly we have here the final leaf ofi a manuscript, because the lowest line (staff) on the verso is unfilled at the end. The contents ofi this singleton suggest that it may belong to a gradual as well. F.m. II No. 118 is very similar, for example, in its format and palaeography. Photograph ofifi. un.'on p. 193.
ANTIPHONARIUM(?)The fragment belongs to a prominent group of manuscripts, characterized by very uniform stylistic traits and the liturgical use of the Åbo diocese (or better, Dominicanum-Aboense). The group consists of the following sources, at least:
HUL: F.m. II Nos. 90,117,118,120,121, F.m. IV Nos. 138,156,157, 160, 173 (this one), F.m. uncatalogued "Borgo [...] 626 Mantals Boskaptz Lengder [...["(fragment of a breviary-hymnary, one bif., inch commcmorationis animarum, dedic. eccl., sanctorum innocentium, Henrici), Aö II 55 (Graduale Uskelense, from the church of Uskela), or parts of it.
Turku Provincial Museum: uncatalogued Ms. b (fragment of a gradual, one defective f., incl. dom. HI- V p. trin.), uncatalogued Ms. c (fragment of an antiphoner, one defective bif., incl. Henrici ep. et m., purifiicationis Mariae.)
SRA: KA Finska Cameralia 71 "Thommas Hanssons [...] 1608" (one f.),88:2"Her Inne Finnes [...] 1610" (one f.), 88:3 "Tullväsendet Åbo 1615-1618" (one £), and FC\ Baltiska fogderäkenskaper F. 390-97 1605, 06 "Här tithi finnes Inbundne Reuersaler [...] Jesper Matzons [...] Perrone Slott [...] 1605-06" (one bif.).
Total: 18 manuscripts.
Malin 1925 pp. 102-103 shows that F.m. II No. 117 originates from the Nådendal Bridgettine cloister (Vallis Grade in Latin, Naantali Fi, founded in 1443 and suppressed in the 16th c) near Åbo. (Compare this to Haapanen's description, according to which the provenance is not certain, Haapanen 1925 pp. 67-69.) The primary provenance at Nådendal strongly suggests that the group as a whole was produced by a school of the cloister. Taitto 1998 (a) pp. 98-101. On the literary activities of the cloister in general see Maliniemi 1943 pp. 99-113. On p. 98 the writer claims that the golden age of the cloister ran from its solemn dedication in 1462 to the mid-1490s. This cannot be directly deduced, however, from the quality and volume of manuscript production by the brethren and / or sisters.
No doubt it is a possible that this kind of book could have been exported from the Vadstena mother house. In fact, a couple of codices from Vadstena were sold and donated to Nådendal in the early days of the latter. Pirinen 1989 p. 24. Against this, however, we must consider the very obvious fact that at Vadstena one could hardly find expertise on the secular use of Åbo, permitting a scribe to produce a liturgical manuscript for the diocese. OnVadstena brethren who came to Nådendal in 1440 see Malin 1928 pp. 9-13 and passim.
The annals ofVadstena have documented that the former confessor general of the cloister, brother Iohannes Borquardi, had died during his visit to Finland in 1447: he was characterized as a "bonus [...] scriptor". Diarium Vadstenense 1988 p. 216, Malin op.cit. p. 11 n. 1.
