Prover togs i
Abstract
Composting of animal manure implies extensive volatilisation of carbon and nitrogen to the atmosphere. Limited ventilation may possibly decrease these losses. Strawrich horsemanure was composted by two different treatments. One windrow was covered with a tarpaulin along the sides, the other was enclosed with plastic sheeting, except for four drainage pipes at the bottom. Probes were taken subsequent to the construction of the windrows in May and after 132 days in October.
In relation to the concentrations of phosphorus, carbon and nitrogen concentrations decreased by 51 vs. 75 percent and 19 vs. 29 percent, respectively (free vs. limited
ventilation). These results do not support the assumption that limited ventilation might decrease the losses of carbon and nitrogen caused by composting. Thus, soil fertility benefits more from the application of non-degraded organic manures.
