Tiivistelmä
In 1992 (June-August) an investigation of the Mariehamn archipelago area (Aland, N. Baltic Sea) was done with regard to Secchi depth, pH, salinity, oxygen, total phosphorus and nitrogen, chlorofyll a content and bottom fauna (species composition, total abundance and total biomass). The shore type, -vegetation, bottom type, fish and birds at five liftoral localities were also recorded. The Mariehamn area has earlier been included in the monitoring programme of Husö Biological Station. The importance of this kind of monitoring has increased, as the impact of man on the ecosystem has increased mainly through diffuse discharges and effluents led directly to the sea. Sampling showed that the nutrient and chlorofyll a contents were quite high at some stations in the late-summer. Although, these high nutrient contents are isolated cases during the summer (productive) period, they ought to be considered beacause they indicate an overgoing eutophication process.
