Limnologia ja hydrobiologiaBiodiversity patterns of most lotic animal and plant groups remain poorly known, which hinders the implementation of effective conservation, monitoring, and restoration programs. The major aims of this thesis were (i) to examine spatial variation in macroinvertebrate assemblage structure and diversity across natural environmental gradients, and (ii) to assess the utility of such information as the basis of stream conservation programs.

Community structure of macroinvertebrates, bryophytes and fish in boreal streams : patterns from local to regional scales, with conservation implications
Paavola, Riku (University of Jyväskylä, 2003)Voitaisiinko luonnonsuojelualueiden valinnassa käyttää nykyistä helpompia menetelmiä? Tällainen voisi olla esimerkiksi ns. ilmentäjälajien käyttö niiden valinnassa, jos eri eliöyhteisöjen rakenteet olisivat yhteneviä sekä ... -
Does catchment geodiversity foster stream biodiversity?
Kärnä, Olli-Matti; Heino, Jani; Laamanen, Tiina; Jyrkänkallio-Mikkola, Jenny; Pajunen, Virpi; Soininen, Janne; Tolonen, Kimmo T.; Tukiainen, Helena; Hjort, Jan (Springer Netherlands, 2019)Context One approach to maintain the resilience of biotic communities is to protect the variability of abiotic characteristics of Earth’s surface, i.e. geodiversity. In terrestrial environments, the relationship between ... -
Ultra-conserved elements provide insights to the biogeographic patterns of three benthic macroinvertebrate species in the Baltic Sea
Petersen, H. Cecilie; Knott, K. Emily; Banta, Gary T.; Hansen, Benni W. (Elsevier, 2022)The Baltic Sea, with its steep salinity gradient, high water retention time, and relatively young age, represents a marginal ecosystem between marine and freshwater extremes. Due to differing invasion history and dispersal ... -
Dead wood and fungi : detection, diversity and conservation in boreal forests
Purhonen, Jenna (Jyväskylän yliopisto, 2018)Dead wood and associated fungal communities are a crucial part of boreal forest ecosystems, and severely affected and threatened by human actions like commercial timber harvesting. Despite their importance for forest ... -
