Tiivistelmä
Arseeni on haitallinen puolimetalli, jota esiintyy Suomessa Pirkanmaan kallioperässä luonnostaan kohonneina pitoisuuksina.
XRF-menetelmällä saatiin lähinnä kvalitatiivisia tuloksia Arsenic is a hazardous metalloid that occurs as naturally elevated concentrations in the bedrock of Pirkanmaa region, Finland. In a rock construction project the rock waste is usually deposited at a suitable site, where it is exposed to the weathering effects of the atmosphere and precipitation. Thus, arsenic may be released to the environment from the deposition site. In the Pirkanmaa region, arsenic concentrations and the environmental qualification of the rock waste is usually assessed during the planning phase of a rock construction project but occasionally arsenic concentration monitoring is required during the excavation phase as well.
In this thesis, three different rock sampling techniques were evaluated for the purpose of arsenic concentration monitoring: rock powder sampling by hammer drill, rock sludge collection from the drilling of the blast holes and block sampling from the waste rock. Three different analytical methods were also evaluated: analysis by Field-Portable (FP) XRF, ED-XRF in laboratory conditions and the aqua regia digestion combined with ICP-MS. Rock samples were collected during the excavation phase of the “Tampereen Rantatunneli” road tunnel. Samples were collected from 20 sampling points by all three methods. All samples were analysed for arsenic by FP-XRF after which samples from 5 sample points were chosen to be analysed by ED-XRF and aqua regia digestion com-bined with ICP-MS, which was used as a reference method. The arsenic concentrations of the tunnel waste waters were also analysed by ICP-MS.
The arsenic concentrations detected were significantly lower (< 11 mg kg-1) than the bedrock and soil background values (26 mg kg-1) in the Pirkanmaa region. The detected exceptions were related to arsenic rich joint filling minerals, such as iron oxyhydroxides. The concentrations in the tunnel waste waters were also lower than the reference values.
According to the results, the most feasible method for arsenic concentration monitoring of the excavated bedrock is the rock powder sampling combined with the analysis by FP-XRF or aqua regia digestion and ICP-MS, which provided semi-quantitative and quantitative results, respectively. The greatest bias comparing to the reference method occurred in the rock sludge samples, which is explained by the random errors caused by the contaminating effects of the flushing water used in the drilling of the blast holes. Block sampling provided moderate results, but the coarse grain size distributions of the samples induced deviation in the FP-XRF results. ED-XRF method provided mainly qualitative results.
